About this place
Gamkaberg Nature Reserve lies in the Little Karoo near Oudtshoorn and Calitzdorp, a place of wide expanses and deep wilderness where three of the Cape's biomes, fynbos, succulent Karoo and subtropical thicket, meet. It was originally proclaimed to protect a remnant population of Cape mountain zebra, which still roam the slopes alongside grey rhebok, klipspringer and a rich variety of birds.
Activities centre on slow exploration: hiking, a 4x4 route, birding and stargazing under exceptionally dark Karoo skies. The reserve rewards visitors who come to disconnect.
Accommodation ranges from the tented Tierkloof, Sweetthorn and Fossil Ridge eco-lodges and the Xami Eco-Lodge to the rustic Ou Kraal huts, restored Stable Rooms and campsites. Please note the reserve is in a baboon-active area, so food must be kept indoors and doors and windows closed.
