About this place
Anysberg Nature Reserve lies deep in the semi-arid Klein Karoo, between the towns of Ladismith, Laingsburg, Touwsrivier and Montagu. Proclaimed in 1990 and now a World Heritage Site, it spans almost 80,000 hectares of plains and the majestic Cape Fold Mountains, with deep valleys, steep gorges and three rivers feeding a surprising diversity of life amid mountain fynbos and Karoo veld.
This is wild, quiet country. Visitors regularly see numerous antelope species and black-backed jackal, and the lucky may glimpse Cape mountain zebra, caracal or the critically endangered riverine rabbit. Leopard still roam the mountains. About 180 bird species make it a strong birding destination, and the reserve also protects San rock art painted thousands of years ago. Activities include 4x4 routes, swimming, hiking and mountain biking.
Accommodation is a cluster of simple, well-run self-catering cottages along with campsites. Please note the reserve is accessible only by high-clearance or 4x4 vehicles, there is no cellphone reception, and guests should bring their own charcoal and firewood. It suits travellers looking for genuine off-grid solitude under big Karoo skies.
This area is a beautiful destination in Western Cape, offering visitors access to local amenities, natural attractions, and the authentic character of South African life.
