About this place
Gecko Rock Private Nature Reserve is nestled in the Nougaspoort Valley, just 25 km from Touws River in the Karoo. An eco-adventure destination, the reserve offers an unparalleled outdoor experience in one of South Africa's most unique natural areas.
Accommodation ranges from intimate campsites to fully equipped self-catering cottages and luxury private retreats. Visitors can stay in De Wets Rus Campsite with seven distinct pitches, the secluded Echo Valley Campsite, the spacious Wooden Cabins, the cosy Rheboksvlakte Cottage, or one of three premier self-catering homes — Southern Nights, Montana Vista, and Sugar Bush — each with a hot tub.
Guests enjoy unspoiled views, breathtaking stars, and days of hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, photography and 4×4 trails. The reserve also offers customised team-building events, conference facilities, flower and succulent tours, bird watching, and stargazing.
Spanning three distinct vegetation types — succulent Karoo (vetplante), rhenosterveld Karoo (shrubs, bushes, trees) and fynbos Karoo (restios, proteas, ericas) — Gecko Rock is home to indigenous game including leopard, springbok, gemsbok, zebra, grey rhebok, duiker, steenbok, klipspringer, aardvark, African wild cat, caracal and honey badger. Birdlife is exceptional, with the rare black harrier and Verreaux's eagle both nesting in the surrounding valleys and cliffs.
Note: there is no WiFi at any accommodation on the reserve — only available at reception. This is part of the off-grid Karoo experience.
Located 2 hours from Cape Town via the N1, then 45–60 minutes from Touws River via gravel roads. Suitable for most passenger vehicles but not low-slung sports cars. Two-night minimum stay on weekends, public holidays and school holidays.

Touws River is a beautiful destination in Western Cape, offering visitors access to local amenities, natural attractions, and the authentic character of South African life.
